Elizabeth Churchill Elizabeth Churchill
elizabethc@island-fitness.com
Not a natural-born athlete, Elizabeth was always the proverbial "last kid picked" for every team. She bumbled through life with an aversion to anything physical until she was well into middle age, when she suddenly discovered an unlikely passion for weightlifting and threw herself into the sport with a ferocity not typical of the average grandmother. She is now a firm believer that it's never too late for even the most deconditioned non-athlete to develop a genuine affinity for fitness and overcome the obstacles of aging to achieve a strong, healthy, athletic body.

In 2008 Elizabeth moved to Bainbridge Island from the heart of Louisiana's Cajun country where she had worked for four years as a strength training coach and competed in local power lifting events. Prior to that she has been employed as a food chemist, an editor, a rosarian, and a professional humor writer. In addition to being a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), she holds a B.A. in neurophysiology from Wesleyan University, a certification in the Biomechanics of Resistance Training from the Cooper Institute in Dallas, and a certification in Group Exercise from the National Exercise Trainers Association. She is certified in CPR/AED and First Aid.

Besides pumping iron, her unrelenting passions include old ugly dogs, tiny unconventional living spaces, and the music of Louisiana. She will be happy to show you her biceps and/or pictures of her newest grandchild.

Colleen Fisher Colleen Fisher
colleenf@island-fitness.com
Colleen has been a fitness trainer for 30 years, following in the footsteps of her late mother, Kelly Nelson, who at the age of 50 started competitive bodybuilding without any fitness background at all. This inspired Colleen to become a personal trainer, a national physique committee judge, and a national level bodybuilding champion herself. In 1998 Colleen won the National Masters bodybuilding championship, and she has been featured in numerous magazines and on national television. Together with her mom, Colleen produced a DVD called “Training for the Ageless."

She believes that fitness should be a lifestyle, and incorporates running, cycling, horseback riding, flexibility, and clean nutrition into her own program. Over the last 10 years Colleen has competed in show jumping with her two horses, Lucy and Kingston. This is now her competitive arena and she is passionate and committed to this sport. A body needs to be in very good physical condition to work with a 1300 pound athletic horse that sometimes has a different agenda!

Strength training is the foundation of Colleen's fitness program. When working with clients, she is passionate about correct form, and coaches each individual on their specific goals. She has worked with all ages and many different types of people, from the competitive athlete to the “just wants to feel and look better” client. Whatever your goals, Colleen will get you there!

Marc LaSof Marc LaSof
marcl@island-fitness.com
Marc comes to Island Fitness after many years in marine rescue, and his focus changed from those in need on the water to those in need of improving their well being and future well being. Marc knows firsthand that if you take care of your body, it will take care of you. He has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and was Washington State Champion in his age group in 2001 and 2003, taking silver in 2002. He was also highly competitive in open water kayak racing, garnering numerous wins and top-three finishes, oftentimes against those twenty years his junior. (Training six days a week, often in harsh conditions, gives one a whole new appreciation and respect for what the body can do!)

Marc was a kayak and water safety instructor in addition to being a guide for Olympic Outdoor Center for several years. It was there that Marc discovered his love of teaching, and that there is nothing more rewarding than watching the progression of an energized student -- whether that student is a young, competitive athlete or a senior looking to improve quality of life and basic mobility.

Marc is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine and believes in training from the inside out, stressing technique, and emphasizing quality over quantity. Although his training is heavily influenced by modern advancements and studies, he firmly believes everyone can use a dose of "old school" now and then.

Ishya's philosophy of balance as the center of fitness has been decades in the making. It was originally developed from her early introduction to the benefits of combining strength, flexibility and coordination from years of training in ballet, and further honed through extensive training in traditional fitness methods. In the early 1980s, while still a practicing architect and interior designer, Ishya began training with aerobics pioneer Jane Fonda. Her continuing education has earned her certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), complemented by Specialty Certifications in Cycling, Hip-Hop, Kickboxing, Pilates, and BOSU.

Her decades of work in the visual and physical realms have taught her the value of balance in all aspects of structural effectiveness. Her specialty in core, balance and coordination, is the synthesis of her years in architecture and fitness. Ishya's goal is to impart the best of her fitness knowledge to anyone seeking to live well. Because it's not just what you do, it's how well you do it that achieves your desired results.

Ishya attended Rhode Island School of Design and Harvard Graduate School of Design, and holds degrees in Fine Arts and Architecture. His goal is to bring together “hands, mind, and heart” to help his massage clients at Island Fitness maximize their physical well-being. To that end, he brings a caring, integrated approach that utilizes intuition tempered with clinical observation, providing a variety of assessment and massage techniques to each client. He has stayed current in his field by regularly taking continuing education courses, including such topics as Facilitated Stretching, Energy Releasing Technique, professional ethics, and advanced training techniques for specific soft tissues.

Prior to receiving his massage credentials, Gale earned a BA in biology from U of Rochester, a technical diploma in mining from British Columbia Institute of Technology, and did graduate work in environmental science at U of Calgary.

Jenny was an elementary school teacher for six years, but after joining a gym and meeting with a personal trainer, she decided to make some lifestyle changes and became certified to teach group fitness classes. In 2006, she completed her Premier Resisted Movement Training certification, left her teaching job, and began a career as a personal trainer.
