Getting Pumped

19 September, 2012

Focusing on your motivation as well as your muscles can help you get pumped to pump iron. Ask your local health club if it offers Personal Training led by a certified personal trainer. If so... bingo! The trainer will teach you proper form and technique, and the group dynamic will inspire you to stick with it and grow stronger.

Weight machines, free weights, barbells, resistance bands, stability balls, water workouts -- there are lots of ways to improve strength and lots of reasons to do so: It builds muscles and bones and improves balance and coordination. And all of those factors get increasingly important with age. The challenge is getting started and keeping at it long enough to make strength training a solid habit. In a recent study, being part of a workout group led by a trained fitness coach made the can-do difference for the participants, who were all over 60!
