It’s January. “Who You Gonna Call”?
For some unknown reason, the human brain has a remarkable ability to come up with excuses to not go to the gym. Too bad “Excuse Making” isn’t an Olympic event! If you really want to get fit this year but find yourself spewing excuses like a perpetual fountain, the EXCUSE BUSTERS at Island Fitness can help! Here are the top 5 most frequent excuses we routinely hear, and how we answer them.
1. EXCUSE: “I’m not a gym person.”
OUR ANSWER: Well, you’re in luck, because Island Fitness is the ideal gym for People Who Aren’t Gym People! Probably 90% of our members don’t think of themselves as “gym people.” They’re just ordinary people, doing what they need to do to take care of themselves. They see the gym as a tool to be used as needed. You may not call yourself “a hammer person,” but you still use a hammer when it’s the tool you need, right? So think of Island Fitness as the tool you need when it’s too dark and rainy to do things outdoors; when you’re recovering from an injury or illness; when your core and upper body need more help than running or cycling can provide; when you’re training for your next big adventure; when you need help with motivation, or want to be part of a community. You don’t have to be a “gym person” to reap the many benefits of a membership at Island Fitness!
2. EXCUSE: “I don’t have time to go to the gym.”
OUR ANSWER: We understand, and we empathize. Many of us struggle to find time these days to balance work, commuting, family, chores, and other obligations. But here’s the thing about time: we all have the same 24 hours every day. It’s not so much about time, as it is about priorities. Try reframing the time excuse this way: “Taking care of my health is not a priority worth making time for.” That’s not quite as convincing, is it? Because the other thing about time is this: no one is ever going to hand you time on a silver platter. You have to MAKE time for yourself. You may have to steal time, fight for time, make sacrifices for time. It probably won’t be easy. But if taking care of your own health is a priority for you, you will do what you have to do to find time for it. And, amazingly, the time will appear. And we’re open 14-18 hrs/day!
3. EXCUSE: “I need to be in better shape before I can start going to the gym.”
OUR ANSWER: Ah, yes. We call this one the “Cleaning up for the house cleaner” excuse. It’s a bit like saying, “My car needs to run better before I can take it to the mechanic,” or “My teeth need to be whiter before I can go to the dentist.” It doesn’t make sense! Yet we totally understand the source of the underlying anxiety. There’s SO much pressure in our society to look a certain way, and to excel at everything we do, that walking into a gym can sometimes feel like an invitation to failure and harsh judgment. A few years ago, the owners of Island Fitness met with the department heads to iron out a mission statement for the club. We came up with this: “Our Mission: To improve the quality of life for our community by providing a welcoming, fun, supportive and knowledgeable fitness experience.” We want you to know that every single person who works at Island Fitness is deeply committed to making the club a welcoming and friendly place for people of all sizes, ages, abilities, and levels of fitness. As a result, we have become a warm welcoming gym filled with people of all sizes, ages, abilities, and levels of fitness, all feeling free of judgment and happily working at their own pace! Remind yourself: You can only start where you are now, not where you hope to be someday.
4. EXCUSE: “I don’t know how to use all that equipment, or what I should be doing.”
OUR ANSWER: At Island Fitness we include over $300 worth of services at no charge to help our new annual members get started. These include an equipment orientation where a trainer will show you how to correctly and safely use the machines; 3 one-hour Ortho-Kinetics assessment sessions with a trainer who will help you start to develop a customized exercise plan that is right for you and your body; and a consultation with a nutrition coach. Memberships also include over 50 free group fitness classes per week, and we’ll help you figure out which classes are suitable for entry level participants. We do this to help our new members, but it’s also good for business: members who take advantage of all these getting-started services are significantly more likely to remain active members for years, rather than dropping out after a few months. We want you to succeed, and we’ll help you do it!
5. EXCUSE: “I don’t need help…I already know what to do.”
OUR ANSWER: Ok, but are you actually doing it consistently? Because sometimes it’s not enough to know what to do, or even how to do it. Look at it this way: football players know how to play football, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need a coach. Numerous studies show that people have a much better chance of reaching their goals if they have some kind of help or support network to provide motivation, encouragement, education, and accountability. This can be a trainer, a group fitness instructor, or a workout buddy. Plus “knowing what to do” and doing the same thing over and over again isn’t nearly as effective as changing your routine every few weeks. At Island Fitness there are lots of opportunities to build a “Team You.” Take advantage of them! We’re all in this together.
