Brian Awareness Tip #4 Review Your Blood Levels Every Year

18 July, 2018

Throughout the month of June we have been bringing you the most important lifestyle steps you can take to keep your brain healthy and strong. In our past three issues, we shared the importance of regular exercise, sleep, and nutrition:
  • Exercise regularly with a goal of 3 hours a week (2/3 cardiovascular and 1/3 strength training).
  • Get at least 7 ½ hours of quality sleep each night.
  • Eat a diet high in anti-inflammatory restorative foods. Dark green leafy veggies and whole food sources that contain healthy fats. Nuts, seeds and avocados are rich in nutrients that will protect the brain.

Our fourth tip for you is to review your blood levels every year with your doctor. Please read below for the reasons and benefits.

Tip #4 Review Your Blood Levels Every Year

Review your blood levels every year with your doctor. Know your blood pressure, cholesterol and fasting blood sugar. Ask your doctor about the Hemoglobin A1c test that tells you your average level of blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. Understanding the importance of these numbers as early as your 30's is a powerful strategy for overall brain health and disease prevention.

How we embrace exercise, sleep, and nutrition will affect our blood levels in a positive or negative way depending on the lifestyle choices we make.

What else influences our blood levels? Science is sending us a strong message to practice kindness, develop meaningful personal relationships, and choose less stress. Yes, find your way to calm your mind and let go of the daily stressors we all experience through a meditation practice, acupuncture, connecting with nature (a walk in the woods), and finding your tribe! Belonging to a community where you feel connected has been proven to boost overall health and contribute to the healing process.

Is this everything? Not by a long shot! There are many things we can add to this list such as exercising the brain with brain games (not the app/screen related type, but the paper & pencil type) and much more. Do your research, it's never too early or too late to make a difference.

Here at Island Fitness we incorporate kindness, love, laughter, community, and friendship in everything we do! Remember, we are here to help you every day!
